- 1 cup butter, unsalted
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 cups icing sugar
- 1 cup caramel pieces (like Werther’s Originals), roughly chopped
- 1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced
Instructions
- Pour the Chex cereal into a large bowl.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, stir in the brown sugar and milk. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the Chex cereal and gently toss to coat evenly.
- Place the icing sugar in a large resealable bag. Add the caramel-coated cereal and seal the bag. Shake vigorously until the cereal is completely coated in icing sugar.
- Spread the puppy chow in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle the chopped caramel pieces and diced apple evenly over the top.
- Let the puppy chow cool completely at room temperature.
